It seems that we’ve reached a crossroads in our training with Sally. She does well when in the apartment, but not out in public, and especially not on the leash. I have had my suspicions that she doesn’t really understand the words which we say, but rather the routine in which we train. Once she figures out which command we are trying to train, the words become irrelevant.
We’ve been reading “Don’t Shoot the Dog”, which on the whole is a great book. They recommend only training one specific behavior at a time, which I’m not sure will work at this point in time.
To test my theory, the other day I substituted numbers (“one, two, three”) for the usual series of commands (“come, sit, down”), and was not entirely surprised to find that the end result was the same.
Sooo, yeah, where do we go from here?
